Born in London in 1968, from a mixed heritage of diaspora and bohemian London. I grew up between the UK, France, Spain, Morocco . My mum a painter left for an cult in India, My father a wanderer working in independent German and French cinema. We hitchhiked across Europe and evading ticket inspectors . In between I stayed with my mother’s mother in some of the most luxurious châteaux imaginable. I ended up largely uneducated going to art college married at 20 , where I studied sculpture at Norwich School of Art under brazilian artist Anna Maria Pacheco — and becoming a father for the first time. Needing to make a living, funded by a government bursary and help from an affluent auntie i I retrained as a traditional stonecarver under John Roberts at the City & Guilds of London Art School, I dreamed of cathedrals and carving a multi-faith tabernacle whilst sculpting headstones. WHen my enthusiasm turned to frustration with the solidity of stone — and with the limitations of craft-like minds and a tree rebellion in South London led to my first nervous breakdown, i exchanged stone for animation. Recovery led to being accepted onto the MA in Animation at the Royal College of Art. Animation opened up a completely different relationship with time, movement, image and storytelling. A life as an independent creative producer/director followed, film festival dont pay mentoring a succession of wonderful talents as a lecturer and then head of department sort of did but the academies had lost their way to capitalism . A love affair with a dancer led to Buenos Aires, an obsession with Argentine Tango and my first feature documentary still to be released.. To cut a long story short this led to Cornwall, where my second and third daughters were born and an ongoing commitment to socially engaged art led to Reimagine Your Town — a psychogeography project built in a game engine at the moment VR was beginning to emerge. Attracted by being funded i accepted a AHRC funded place at the University of Plymouth’s Trans-Tech Research Centre. Wrote my thesis on Henri Bergson as a lens on data of participatory mapping. Three years became eight., Employment as a postdoctoral researcher in arts and health — made it all seem worth while before being derailed when bi polar darkness came crashing in. Recovering from that is when The Existential Sitcom began. My alter ego , a mental health advcate who allows me to embrace the absurdity of this society of the spectacle and re commit myself to the only career i have . an Artist I continueto find my way in through a creative ritual across film, sculpture, participatory mapping and creative social activism — EMployment is no longer an option i seek your support and if you have any capital patronage , if not just spread the word I’m Bec Brodskis, an artist, filmmaker, dancer and maker working across performance, film, participatory art and creative research. My work is interested in how we experience the world — through our bodies, our relationships, our imagination and the systems we find ourselves inside. I make things that sit somewhere between art and life: films, performances, dances, objects, experiments and situations that invite people to participate rather than simply observe. I’m interested in the serious, the absurd and everything in between.
